Daedelus and the original box
Just found the video on an old Future Music DV of Daedelus talking about the 100h prototype..
(you’ll need quicktime)
Flash vs 40h - Life

Here are the files for the life app I have hacked together using Flash and flosc. You can now hit buttons on the 40h to activate the “cells”. Once you finish setting the buttons you want, it will auto-start and the life algorythm will run.
The code is really shoddy at the moment, a s mix of AS1 and AS2 but I will refine this later, and make it all nice and neat AS2.
In order to run the app you will need:
SerialIO (only tested on OSX at the mo!)
Flosc latest version
Flash 8
That is the setup i have been using.
In the archive there is a screenshot to show how you need to set up flosc and serialio.
Feel free to leave comments below. And once again, excuse the dodgy code!!.
whitney music box..
not really monome related but amazing all the same..
Rehearsing with 40h
Did a rehearsal last night with the 40h… I set up some samples in ableton that were all triggered off the 40h. Only really used about a quarter of the buttons in the end!
Flash vs 40h
I finally got Flash talking to the 40h. Using the Flosc Applet, it’s posible to send OSC to and from Flash, using XMLSockets. Here’s a movie of a simple ‘Game of life’ flash app which I hacked together. Will post the source soon.
Reaktor problems - more info
got this from David at Monome:
“From what I can tell, this is something that mapd should solve. It seems
to be a common problem with communicating with Reaktor over OSC. (NOTE!
Input into Reaktor works great at the moment). This has to do with how
Reaktor labels OSC outputs. I’d recomend waiting for mapd which is right
around the corner.
Here is a thread discussing the matter…
Alternatively, you could build a parser in PD or Max to translate the
messages until then.”
Looks like we will have to wait for mapd
Reaktor test
Have been trying to set up the 40h to talk to Reaktor via OSC. So far, i have managed to get Reaktor to receive events from the 40h. Problem is, getting reaktor to set the LED’s on the 40h seems to be a problem.

This is a screenshot of my Reaktor OSC setup (and serialIO setup). Through the reaktor OSC settings, I can send and receive OSC data with the 40h. Like I say, incoming data from the 40h is fine, but sending OSC packets to the 40h is flakey.
i can send the “test” OSC message to the 40h and that works ok. but any “led” based messages are ignored.

I guess the best way to work this out is to post my test files… so here we go:
This is a reaktor patch that takes input from the 40h and routes it to the screen. More importantly, it also sends data to the 40h. The XY field sends ‘led’ messages, and the other buttons do what they say (set the Test and low-power modes).
At the moment, the test button works ok, but the XY grid is not working. For some reason, the 40h accepts the ‘box/test’ packet, but not ‘box/led’.
So thats about it for the mo. any help is gratefully received.
Arrival.

It is here! My friend lou bought it over from LA, thus a bit of a wait, but worth it. below is the startup state which is the numbers 1-8, represented in binary.
So it’s onto actually doing something with this thing.

Flash <-> 40h
Just found Flosc which is a Flash – OSC bridge, written in Java. Should be interesting to see what the 40h and flash can do together..
more boxes...
Weird how things go, Evan Morris has made a homebrew controller that is eerily similar to the 40h
